The beloved, quirky mid-century home was purchased with the intention to remodel, but peeling back layers during that process revealed that the existing structure was dilapidated beyond repair. There was no sensible choice but to rebuild from scratch.

Building new meant the opportunity to reimagine the floor plan: still situated around a central pool, we organized the program around the four corners of the lot. The guest and owner’s wings were essentially positioned along opposing sides, allowing the indoor and outdoor entertainment spaces to become the bridge that provides a clear line of sight through the middle of the property. A new detached guest house against the rear couples with the garage to provide closure for the courtyard along the back.

While the architecture of the 60s does not directly translate to contemporary building codes and practices, we relied on the simplicity of structure to direct the aesthetic, allowing current building technologies to recall the original mid-century gestalt. Several neighbors were surprised to hear that the final product is in fact a new house, not a remodel, and our firm wears that fact as a badge of pride.
