Craving expansion, the owners of this Windsor home purchased the empty parcel next door and tasked us with creating a courtyard oasis.
To begin, we doubled the street façade, which made the existing side porch the main axis of the new spaces. Existing porch columns were repeated around three sides of the new courtyard, becoming covered balconies, enclosed porches, and landscaping elements. The pool is anchored by a cabana that balances the space; the detached, 2-story carriage house with garage below and guest house above looks upon the dynamic landscape, as the pool lifts above the yard and the firepit carves into the ground.
The interior organization was also affected: the new footprint became the main house, while the existing was converted to guest spaces.
The remodel changed the home’s building type from linear to courtyard, provided a private exterior space, and shifted the home’s uses, all emerging from the existing aesthetic. Thus, the final result doesn’t appear to be an addition, but instead a unified home.
