Located in an affluent neighborhood surrounded by rows of similarly-styled Georgian homes, this transformation was accomplished by strategically enclosing exterior spaces, opening up interiors, and blending the home’s strong historic aesthetic with a contemporary interior.

Enclosing the front covered spaces brought the front door toward the street, simplifying the entry sequence and creating a sleek gallery lined with windows on one side and art on the other. In the rear, the previously enclosed Family Room was converted to a covered outdoor space. The interior wall separating the kitchen and dining room became an interior window, further allowing the views and sunlight to stream past the home’s exterior walls.

In addition to a new, contemporary landscape and pool design, the front entry was cleaned up by replacing corner quoins with rustication. The arched colonnade, exterior keystone lintels and eave trims were simplified around the perimeter of the home.

The end product is both a historic interpretation that maintains the vernacular of the neighborhood and also a special, private, and modern space for the homeowners.
